My name is Darrell L. Roberts and I am a candidate for Calvert County Commissioner of District 3. I have lived here with my family for over eight years - my kids have attended our public schools, I have coached youth soccer, been a Calvert County steward, helped to clean and restore our coastlines, and I have been committed to my neighbors and those in need. Calvert County is my home and I am dedicated to the betterment of this community for all residents, present and future.
As your District 3 County Commissioner, I will focus on our community and its residents with an emphasis on transparency and open lines of communication. I will listen as often, if not more, as I speak with an open mind to the concerns of our residents and businesses. The quality of education in Calvert County, the natural beauty of our environment, and responsible growth are of utmost importance to me and my family – these were the very things that drew us home to
Calvert and I will strive to maintain these unique and invaluable aspects of our community.
I have dedicated my life to service, first as a member of the United States Navy and
Army National Guard and as advocate for skilled workers as an active member of a union and a national non-profit. Furthermore, my years in the construction industry and involvement in numerous projects has given me invaluable insight into the building process, responsible
development, and project management.
I have several years of experience managing and working within budgets large and small, ranging from small projects to millions of dollars’ worth of assets and capital. I am also skilled at fundraising as well as locating, applying to, and administering federal, state, and local grants then allocating those funds in alignment with a strategic plan to ensure each dollar had maximum impact and projects reach their fullest potential.
I am a 21-year member of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers Union and have worked on numerous construction sites and planning efforts with specific experience in commercial and industrial development.
I had the honor of serving in the United States Navy shortly after graduating from high school, attaining the rank of Second Class Petty Officer and being a member of the inaugural crew of the USS George Washington (CVN 73), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. I joined the Army National Guard after being honorably discharged from the Navy, where I deployed as an Infantryman on a peacekeeping mission to Kosovo. There I served as a Squad Leader on numerous missions over the course of 8 months.
I led the National non-profit program Helmets to Hardhats for nearly 14 years providing services, resources, and opportunities to transitioning military members and their families. Under my leadership, we helped tens of thousands of military veterans obtain quality middle-class careers and top-notch skills training within registered apprenticeship programs.
I am a firm believer in lifelong learning and have earned an undergraduate degree in
Business Management from the National Labor College, a Masters in Executive Leadership from
Georgetown University, and several graduate certificates.
